Obviously, Steve Sax’s meteoric rise through the Dodgers system meant a lot of good stories for me. To interview him, I went to the West Sacramento home of Sax’s parents and I remember Sax suddenly stopped talking when a TV report on the Davey Lopes trade came on. Like a little kid watching a Christmas special, Sax leaned on one hand in front of the TV to get a better look. It would be a magical next 12 month for Steve, as 1982 ended with him being named the NL Rookie of the Year.
