It’s hard to describe today how big the Pig Bowl was circa 1980. The party at Hughes Stadium would last all week, and for the game itself, the stadium was sold out. Being the new guy that year, I was got the duty all week (it was a story the vets on the sports staff avoided like a plague). I was less than a year out of college when I wrote this, and naturally focused on the drinking going on out there, something more than a few people involved weren’t real happy about.
