Toll Reaches 7/Sacramento Union/Nov. 15, 1988

The first body was found on a Friday, and with weekends off, I watched (very much wanting to be there) as two more bodies turned up on Saturday, and two more Sunday. Meanwhile, the prime suspect skipped town and no one knew where she was. The scene Monday, as the digging continued was the craziest I’d seen, with police spokesman Bob Burns getting lambasted in a street news conference that was televised live on local TV. The other thing I remember about that day is that even though the Bee was slow to get to the scene when the first body was found, they had more than a dozen covering the story that Monday -- to the Union’s two -- and I felt overwhelmed. But we didn’t miss much, and I to this day feel proud about that.
